The North Bend High School boys varsity basketball team took on the Newport Cubs at the North Bend court where the stands were filled and both sides of the crowd screamed and yelled for their team. Newport took up only a small section of the stands as the game began. As the referee tossed the ball up into the air and the tip off was taken by Newport.
The Cubs took an early lead over the Dogs but one that was not significant. Newport started the game quickly and took North Bend by surprise but North bend caught on quickly and started to step up their defense as best they could. At the end of the first half North Bend trailed by a mere eight points behind the Cubs. As the second half started North Bend knew what they had to do. They came out and slowed down the game but focused on making each play count. As the ball went back and forth points counted up on both sides. As the fourth quarter dawned upon the game North Bend was just one point behind and on a great shot by Logan Lucero gained the lead. This was the first time North bend had been in front of the Cubs. North Bend fell behind once more but soon gained a four point lead over Newport. Then off of a three point shot from Newport the game came back to a one point difference once again. It was 52-51 North Bend ahead and just as the clock hit zero 20 hands reached up to grab the ball, North Bend trying to bring it down and Newport to put it up into the net. As most of the players followed the ball to the ground the buzzer rang and North Bend fans began to hit the courts in excitement a whistle came from the referee calling a foul against North Bend. All of the North Bend fans, 3/4 of the people in the gym, yelled at the referee they watched as The newport foulee took the free throw line, He took his first shot as the fans all yelled hoping he would miss but to no avail the ball went in. North Bend called a time-out for mental anguish against the Cubs. As the one Newport player took the line and everyone on the North Bend side begged for a miss the player shot the ball and unfortunately for North Bend it went in and just like that on a skeptical call after the buzzer ended North Bend's season and gave the Cubs a victory. The ending score was North Bend (52)-(53). This was a stunning defeat for North Bend who expected to go much farther in the state playoffs. north Bend had recieved first in district but was shut down early and concluded their season for the year. Better luck next year to the North Bend players.
