MHS fb They weren’t even born yet the last time North Bend beat Marshfield in football. But to the 11 seniors on the Bulldogs roster, they wept with joy Friday night at Vic Adams Field following a 21-14 win over their Bay Area Rivals. The last time North Bend beat the Pirates was 1990. It was a push-and-shove first half. No one scored until the second half and it came on a turnover that put the first six of the 2010 on scoreboard with 6:43 to go in the third. Marshfield quarterback Dallas Milburn was attempting to throw a deep pass to his brother Dalton at midfield; however, Jon Harris read it all the way and stepped in front of the tight end to pick off the pass. The run to the end zone was not an easy sprint, but Harris used speed and shifty moves to score. The junior got the second TD as well following a Milburn fumble. It took North Bend 8-plays to go 48-yards capped by Harris’ 18-yard run. But, the Pirates’ Jorgen Mulkey blocked the extra point attempt with 2:17 remaining in the third. The Pirates responded on the next series that carried over into the fourth. Five-plays 59-yards, ended when Milburn threw a tight spiral to Dalton Milburn in the end zone with 10:24 to play. The play that set it up; however, was a 39-yard pass to Kody Crook that moved the ball from Marshfield 42 to the Bulldogs’ 19. The E-P was good, 13-7. With just over two-minutes to play, Milburn hit Crook again, this time for 49-yards that placed the ball on the Bulldogs’ 17. Milburn and Crook did it one more time to reach the 10. Then it was Tyler Davidson’s turn and the senior ran the ball to the three. Milburn followed with a keeper to pay dirt to tie the game with 2:10 to play. Dalton Milburn connected on the extra point and the Pirates had their first lead. Things looked to be going Marshfield’s way after stopping North Bend with a four and out. But, with 1:26 on the clock. The Pirates were trying to ice the game at the Bulldogs’ 27, when Milburn planned to go to a knee behind a tight formation. The only problem was he didn’t have the ball when the rush up the middle knocked him backwards. North Bend recovered the fumble and was back in business with 27.9 seconds to go at their own 28. Bulldog coach Rick Taylor inserted Hamilton Mateski to the game for the first time. Quarterback Logan Lucero handed the ball off to his cousin Jake Lucero who flipped the ball to Mateski. The sophomore threw long to Cody Harden who got behind the Pirate defenders. He sprinted 72-yards and North Bend was back in front 19-14. Logan Lucero took the snap for the hold on the extra point, but instead of holding for the kick, got up and sprinted into the right corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion, 21-14, with 23.8 seconds to go. A couple of long ball tosses were incomplete for the Pirates and the clock ran out setting off a Bulldog celebration not seen for two decades.

Pete Susick Stadium For the first fall in years, Pete Susick Stadium at Coos Bay will not be used for football this year. The field is closed after the Coos Bay School District removed the artificial surface in an attempt at emergency repairs to get it playable this season. However; the second phase of the repair project reportedly only attracted one bidder and the price was far above the budgeted amount. District officials decided to cancel the field’s use this season, and go out for a full bid process to attract the best contract. An impact test conducted this summer showed the playing surface was too hard for physical impact and the district decided to replace the surface. Johnson Rock Products removed the surface carpet, but the work on subsurface layer and drainage around the field was a separate phase. Marshfield High School will now have to play all of its varsity games at North Bend’s Vic Adams Field.

The Portland Pilots were second with 57 points, followed by Oregon State (59) and Portland State (103).
