Bay Area Rivalry They talked about a rivalry that had been of greater intensity in the Bay Area community, but now it isn’t as intense. They also talked about how both teams have great student-athletes and that they were looking forward to playing each other Friday night. Head football coaches at North Bend and Marshfield met Wednesday for a barbecue luncheon at the new NBHS Hall of Champions. About 60 Booster Club members from both schools attended the fourth annual event and heard second year Pirate Head Coach Justin Ainsworth talk about how he played in the annual Bay Area Rivalry four times as a Marshfield player and added this was his ninth year as a coach. Bulldog Head Coach Rick Taylor is in his third year with North Bend, and he told those in attendance that any other time in the season, they’re rooting for Marshfield, but not this Friday night. The game at Vic Adams Field kicks off at 7 p.m.
Meet the Pirates The new artificial surface project at Marshfield High School’s Pete Susick Stadium in Coos Bay will force school officials to move their annual “Pirate Night” activities scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2. Athletic Director Bryan Trendell says the event will still start at 5 p.m.; however, football will move to the grass practice field below the Harding School, the junior varsity and freshman volleyball teams will scrimmage inside the Harding Gym and soccer will use Golden Field next to the U.S. Post Office on Golden Ave. The varsity volleyball team will be at a Midwestern League Jamboree in Eugene. Trendell says they will halt the scrimmages at 5:30 p.m. to allow for Parent’s Meetings. At 6 p.m., the Marshfield Booster Club will provide a Hamburger Dinner BBQ for free to the student-athletes and coaches at Buck’s Place on the eastern end of the stadium; however the rest of the stadium will remain closed. The work on the field will also force MHS to move the Pirates’ freshman and jayvee football games scheduled for Sept. 9th. The frosh team will play at Sunset Middle School in the Empire District, while the junior varsity will play at North Bend. The Pirates’ varsity game on Sept. 10th against North Eugene will also be played at North Bend High School’s Vic Adams Field. Trendell is confident Marshfield’s home game Sept. 24th against Eagle Point will be played on the new surface.
MHS Boosters The Marshfield Booster Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Thursday, Sept. 9th, at the All American Pizza Coop at 4th St. & Golden Ave. in Coos Bay. The meeting, featuring MHS coaches and student-athletes, will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Booster Club had met previously at Abby’s Pizza in Coos Bay, but was approached by the owners of the All American Pizza Coop about possibly holding meetings in their restaurant. Both businesses submitted bid proposals. The Booster Club wants to thank Abby’s Pizza and their staff for their past support and looks forward to continuing to work with them to support Pirate sports. The MHS Booster Club will meet on Thursdays, 11:30 a.m., throughout the school year.

OSU uniforms Oregon State football was center stage Wednesday morning in Manhattan as the Beavers were one of 10 collegiate football teams to have their Nike Pro Combat uniforms unveiled. The Beavers, the only team to participate from the Pacific-10 Conference, will wear their Pro Combat uniform on Dec. 4 in the Civil War against Oregon. The jersey is an ode to the Oregon State "Giant Killers" team from 1967. As described by Nike, an orange, called Solar Orange, is the "predominant motif, seen on the helmet, base layer sleeves, pants and socks. "To match the archival dirtied white look of '67, the pant color is Sail instead of stark white. An iconic `O' mark is used on the front left hip of the pant, while `OSU' forms on the gloves when the palms face outward.
