UO vb
With its home opener this Wednesday, the No. 18 University of Oregon women’s volleyball team climbed two spots Monday in the first national poll of the season released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.  The Ducks enjoyed their 45th straight week in the top 25, a stretch that has included top-10 appearances in 2007, ’08 and ’09, and 14 editions altogether in that span.  Around the Pac-10, seven teams again ranked top 25, and two more teams UO face in 2010 received votes (Florida International and Santa Clara).  Compared to last week, No. 3 Stanford and No. 14 UCLA climbed one and two positions, respectively, No. 10 USC and No. 11 California remained the same, and No. 9 Washington and No. 24 Arizona dropped one and six spots, respectively.

Hornung Award
The University of Oregon’s Kenjon Barner has been added to the watch list for the inaugural Paul Hornung Award, presented by the Louisville Sports Commission to the most versatile player in college football.  As a freshman, Barner ranked eighth in the Pac-10 with 1,553 all-purpose yards (ninth-best in a single season at UO) and set the team’s season mark for kickoff return yardage with 1,020.  Barner joins 48 other all-purpose standouts on the list and is one of 20 on top 25 teams.

No. 22/24(USA Today/AP) Oregon State (0-0) opens the 2010 collegiate football season vs. No. 6/7 (USA Today/AP) TCU Horned Frogs (0-0), Sat., Sept. 4 in the Cowboys Classic at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Game time is 4:47 p.m. PDT with ESPN providing live television.  Oregon State and TCU have never met in football. The visit to the state of Texas is the first for the Beavers during the regular season since a 1996 trip to Baylor.  Oregon State Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis had a goal of scheduling a game in Texas so James and Jacquizz Rodgers could play close to friends and family, and that was a significant reason as to how this game developed.
