Crabbers Join SOLV in Fall Beach & River Cleanup
The Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission (ODCC) announced Friday that it has taken a major sponsorship role in SOLV’s annual fall beach clean-up along the Oregon coast. The industry-funded group, which represents the state’s 429 ‘limited entry’ Dungeness crab permit holders and their crews, joined nine other well-known sponsors contributing to this year’s expanded ‘beach and riverside’ clean-up scheduled for September 25th and involving thousands of volunteers on beaches from the Columbia River to the California border.  ODCC Executive Director, Nick Furman said his organization was pleased to have the opportunity to be affiliated with SOLV and its partners in the massive volunteer effort, which celebrates its 26th year of rounding up trash that washes up or is left behind on Oregon beaches.  “Crabbers have a vested interest in Oregon’s near-shore waters and take their ‘stewardship’ role seriously.” said Furman. “Clean beaches are just as important as clean waters, and we want to do our part on both fronts.”  Furman hopes that crab fishermen will go beyond their financial investment in the day’s activities and spend some time on the beaches in their communities picking up litter and debris with the rest of the folks who turn out. A mailing sent out to the entire fleet encouraged crabbers to register as volunteers and join the ODCC staff, who will be at a couple of different locations for the three-hour long event. LOUIE, the crab industry’s giant ‘mascot’ plans to be at the Seaside collection site with his ‘Crabbers Care’ message, in support of SOLV’s efforts in that ocean side town.  ‘Operation CRABPOT  II’, the crab industry’s program to round up ‘stray’ and lost crab pots at the end of the season and bring them in to the dock got underway this week, with volunteers in three areas along the coast taking advantage of the good weather to go out on the ocean and retrieve derelict gear. Patterned after SOLV’s shore side program, the ODCC hopes to make this an annual event and one that will insure that Oregon’s waters are as clean as its beaches.
