McGuffin hearing A request for a hearing to lower an accused murderer’s bail has been canceled at the request of attorneys. Twenty-eight year old Nicholas James McGuffin, indicted on a murder charge for allegedly killing 15-year old Leah Freeman back in June 2000, asked Judge Michael Gillespie during an arraignment hearing last week to reduce his bail claiming he was not a flight risk and that he was a family man. Judge Gillespie set a hearing for the request on Thursday, September 2nd. However, according to a news release from Coos Co. District Attorney R. Paul Frasier, the hearing was “canceled at the request of Mr. McGuffin’s attorneys.” McGuffin is being represented by noted defense attorney Bob McCrea of Eugene. His next scheduled appearance in court is a status hearing set for Oct. 11th. McGuffin is being held under a bail of $2 million.

Getting ready for final Summer holiday Police officers in Oregon and around the country started stepping up impaired driving enforcement efforts August 20, and are keeping the pressure on through the Labor Day holiday weekend, September 3 - 6. Coinciding with efforts to remove impaired drivers off the road is a statewide effort running August 30 through September 12 monitoring safety belt usage, with an emphasis on child passengers. Last year during the national crackdown period, Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers reported a 13 percent increase in the number of DUII arrests as compared to the previous year. The highly publicized enforcement efforts by Oregon police officers may have had an impact as the Labor Day holiday weekend approached. Prior to the holiday weekend OSP troopers reported a 60 percent jump in the number of reported DUII arrests, but during the holiday weekend reported DUII arrests dropped 18 percent drop compared to the 2008 Labor Day holiday period. Fatal crash statistics tracked by ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) indicate the Labor Day holiday period is historically the second deadliest on Oregon roads. Since 1970, an average of seven traffic-related deaths happens in Oregon each year during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Last year, two people died on Oregon roads during the 78-hour reporting period, September 4 – 7. One victim was the lone occupant in a single vehicle rollover crash in Josephine County and the second was a pedestrian who died five days after being struck in Klamath County.
Sacagawea thief wanted A 45-year old North Oregon Coast male who participated in the widely-publicized theft of a bronze statue of Sacagawea and her baby from Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Warrenton in 2008, now has a felony warrant out for his arrest. Marcus Bologna was sentenced to 50-days in jail and two-years on probation for his participation in the theft of the statue that was eventually found cut up in a metal scrap yard in Bend. Prosecutors theorized that the thieves wanted to cash in the bronze metal and buy illegal drugs. Three people were arrested for the theft. A new donated statue replaced the one stolen earlier. Bologna is wanted for violating his probation.
Bridge to Bridge Eleven entered, but only one finished. This year’s Bridge to Bridge sailing race between Newport and Astoria was won by Eric Rimkus of Portland. He was the only sailor who completed the 96-nautical mile challenge last month within the time limit set by the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, the sponsors of the event that originated in 1976. Rimkus sailed “Gladiator,” a Cheetah 30, from the #2 buoy off the Columbia River Bar to the Y buoy just outside the Yaquina Bay Bar on the Central Oregon Coast to take first place. “Cool Change,” a C&C owned by Frank and Sandy Noragon of Newberg, also sailed the entire course, but were just outside the allotted time. Three other yachts chose to abandon the race and returned to their home ports in Astoria and Portland. The remaining six boats motored into Newport and received a hero’s welcome from members of the Yacht Club for completing the course. Everyone was treated to a pig roast for the awards ceremony.
