Several Bay Area triathletes competed in the Duckbill Thrill Olympic Distance Triathlon in Lowell, Oregon over the weekend. The event consisted of a 1500 meter swim in Creek Reservoir, followed by a 40 kilometer bike ride and a 10 kilometer run. Robert Lounsbury finished highest of the local athletes winning the 40-45 year old age group and placing 11th overall. Lounsbury moved up the field on the bike leg, covering the hilly course in 1:09:51. He continued passing people with a blistering run leg of 42:18 (8th fastest overall).

Steve Delgado, Steve Groth, and Steve Giss finished 6th, 7th, and 9th, respectively in the 40-45 year old age group. Delgado had an outstanding bike leg, 28th overall. Groth posted the 17th fasted run time overall. Giss put together consistent performances in all three disciplines. Basil Pittenger also completed the endurance event despite still recovering from recent bronchitis. All five of the men are members of local triathlon club, CROAK.

Weather was a big topic of conversation after the event. Snow fell in the surrounding hills a day before the event and race time temperature just broke the 40 degree mark. The athletes donned extra clothing and complained of cold extremities. “I couldn’t feel my feet when I got out of the water and they stayed numb until about 3 miles into the run”, said Giss.
