(Coos Bay) – More than a half century may separate the age of Bay Area Teen Idol Contestants and the year the song they performed was made originally famous, but the nine remaining competitors put on one of the best shows of the Bay Area Teen Idol Season before a crowd of 300 this week. The audience patiently waited through the choice section of the show to get to the Swing/Big Band genre that featured songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole. 14-year-old Ally Putas stole the show with Cab Calloway’s “Minnie the Moocher” after inviting the audience to participate and using other elements the judging panel has sought this entire season from all contestants. Judge Dennis Lindahl praised Putas for being well-prepared for both vocals and use of the stage. She also scored big with both judges and the audience with her rendition of “My Immortal” originally produced by Evanescence. 14-year-old Thaddeus Graham-Miller of Bandon took second place followed by 14-year-old Marissa Cato of Coos Bay. All three at the top not only excelled at the swing/ big band portion of the program, they performed well in the choice. Graham-Miller has proven to be a force to be reckoned with in the vocal competition by pleasing the audience with his facial expressions and stage performance though he has been criticized at times for pitch. He walked away with last weeks People’s Choice award sponsored by Fred Meyer and outdoor in. Eliminated from the contest was 15-year-old Tamara Burrell of Lakeside who missed several lyrics during her performance of "Cats in the Cradle". Also eliminated was 13-year-old Lauryn Hoyt of Coquille, but not because of her scores. Hoyt will be unable to perform next week. So to give another contestant one more chance to compete, Hoyt took the technical disqualification this week. Hoyt performed "Gravity" for choice and used a cast of swing dancers in her second performance. She was praised for her dancing, vocals and overall performance The vocal contest continues next week at the Egyptian Theatre with 7 contestants. Performers will be singing a collection of songs from Broadway and a song with a “color” in the title. The “People’s Choice” winner from Thursday night will be announced on Thursday August 19th. Bay Area Teen Idol is a drug, alcohol and tobacco-free event sponsored by Bay Area Together For Youth, Coos County Commission on Children and Families, Fred Meyer, and K-Dock. Performers range in age from 13 to 18 and reside in Coos County.
